Willowry Farm – Fiona & Anthony Walters
Rud Sawers was employed by us as an architect to ensure the smooth passage of a detailed planning application to the Dartmoor National Park. The permission was for a 1,600 square feet extension and other extensive structural building works to our cross passage farm house on Dartmoor.
The brief was to restore the unlisted, but, building of architectural interest by using natural local materials, and to interpret our ideas accordingly. As he said on our first meeting, ‘be the pen in your hand’. However, Rud was forthcoming with practical solutions and aesthetics which we embraced in our scheme. The Design and Access Statement he produced made comprehensive reference to sustainable design features and use of renewable energy which encouraged the planners to look favourably on our application. Furthermore, Rud was sensitive to the historical integrity of our design and after research incorporated features we wished to use, which also impressed the Historical Buildings Officer.
He communicated with the builder and other members of our design team very happily. Without appeal, the detailed planning application was passed successfully with conditions imposed which were not unexpected.
He has a very amenable disposition and a good relationship with the Authority.

The Rooute Project – John Hamblin
I first met Rud two years ago when he was working on the new ‘super hostel’ on Plymouth which is due to open later this year. Once of the key ingredients on this project was to ensure that the design team understood and included homeless people’s views on the proposal. I observed Rud at several consultation events where he was working with homeless people to hear their views, not in a tokenistic way but in a way that gave them real ownership and buy-in. He appears to have a natural way of engaging with people regardless of their circumstance and always gave a genuine impression of trying to understand the needs and concerns of others.
Since then we have employed Rud Sawers Architects as the project architect on the construction of the Rooute Centre in Torbay. The Rooute Centre is a self-build enterprise centre in the heart of Torbay which is due to commence early this year. The projects were a particularly challenging project not only due to its self-build nature, but also due to its location which is in the middle of a residential area.
Rud has excelled himself on this project not only from a design perspective but also from a community consultation viewpoint. He has held regular consultation events with the public, which initially was very challenging turned out to be hugely positive.
Rud always answered public concerns in a very honest and considerate way and was clearly one a the key contributors in getting the project through the planning process.
If you are looking for a mainstream normal architect, Rud is clearly not your person. If however you want an enthusiastic architect who cares passionately about his work and the impact of his work Rud is clearly someone you should seriously consider.

Lympstone Hotel – Michael Caines MBE
Rud Sawers Architects were commissioned as lead consultant, architects, landscape architects and planning supervisor for Lympstone Manor Hotel and Restaurant in May 2015.
Rud and his team have worked positively and creatively to embrace and develop my detailed vision for a 21-bedroom luxury hotel and fine dining restaurant.
Throughout the outline design, planning, technical design and construction stages, RSA have exceeded our expectations in meeting the demanding challenge in providing cost effective, creative, timely and robust solutions to enable my vision to be realised.
Following successfully achieving planning approval by working collaboratively with East Devon Planning Authority, RSA have worked diligently working through the discharge of conditions.
Early site investigation of the existing building confirmed that the renovation of the existing building was far more extensive than originally predicted. The building fabric was suffering from significant lack of maintenance over recent years which required major refurbishment and upgrading, this challenge was embraced by the consultant team, led by RSA as lead consultants.
RSA’s hard work and steadfast ability to support and work collaboratively with our client team, consultants and contractors has significantly contributed in ensuring the quality of Lympstone Manor as a luxury hotel and fine dining restaurant destination.
On behalf of all at Lympstone Manor, we would recommend Rud Sawers Architects exemplary service to any prospective client. If I could have them working with me in the kitchens, I would!
