Project Brief
In late 2014, RSA were commissioned by Plymouth City Council and Chapter One Housing Association to design the refurbishment and extension of a redundant, ex government building on the borders of the Barbican in Plymouth.
Project Detail
The challenging brief included the need a mixture of 30 no. 1, 2 and 3 bedroom flats for people on the housing register.
Construction challenges included working within an existing building of compromised headroom and heavy weight steel and concrete construction.
Following extensive design investigations and development of various layout options, We achieved Planning consent to convert the building to residential use.
The design included the rational design of a central circulation core and lift space and the provision of flat accommodation with views to the Barbican and neighbouring streets.
Historic walls were creatively retained and remodelled to create visual slot windows and the technical improvements to the building were considerable.
The building was successfully opened in Spring 2016 in providing safe and secure homes for vulnerable families on the housing register.
The project was completed in 2015.
